Never again.

Going away tomorrow...

Not much to type about... just that I feel like adding this in.

Excerpt from Horrible Histories - The Frightful First World War by Terry Deary.

"There were lots of tragedies in the First World War. Almost every family in Britain, France, Germany and Russia lost someone. You can go to any town or village and see the names of the dead carved on stone memorials. Many of the men who joined together died together and left their home towns desolate.

But that wasn't the real tragedy. The cruellest thing of all was that the First World War didn't solve any problems and it didn't bring peace. It lead to the Second World War and far, far more misery, death and desturction.

Those whose names are carved on the memorials believed that they were fighting for peace. Many would have given their lives gladly if they knew they had died in 'the war to end all wars'.

What went wrong? Big mistakes and small accidents. One accident so small that no one noticed it at the time. It happened in a German dugout during the Battle of the Somme. A british shell smashed into the trench and killed most of the Germans in it. But by a hideous chance one German escaped with just a shell splinter in his face. He lived. He lived to start another war. His name was Adolf Hitler. Lucky Hitler - unlucky world.

Sometimes history is changed by a great events like the First World War - sometimes it is changed by freak accidents in a fraction of a second: the arrow that hit King Harold in the eye at the Battle of the Hastings ... the shell that failed to kill Hitler.

History can be horrible. But each of us should find our nearest war memorial, stand in front of it and read the names.

Then say, "Never again."

If everyone says that, and means it, then the deaths will not have been such a waste."

Enough said.
